Round Lake Shoreline - Archaic
Ground stone projectile points, plus the carefully knapped (chipped) specimen of exotic lithic material, represent the Archaic Period of 5000 years ago. These spear or dart points were meant to be thrust or thrown with an atlatl. Smaller points were not employed until the invention of the bow and arrow. The ground stone fragment (far right) is likely from a woodworking tool.

This projectile point is made of a fine-grained sliver of stone ground to the desired dimension. The workmanship is unremarkable, and it appears to be a completely utilitarian piece with a suggested lack of finish.
Projectile Point
Collection: Round Lake Shoreline
Object: Projectile Point
Material: Lithic
Period: Archaic
This mid- to large-size stemmed projectile point is typical of the Archaic Period. The style covered a lengthy period commencing approximately 5000 years ago. Too large for an arrowhead, it would have been affixed to a large dart and used with a throwing board or atlatl. It may also have been thrust or thrown as a lance or spear point.
