Egan Farm - Ceramics
Very few non-metal items have been located at this site. Among the exceptions are fragments of a teacup emblazoned with a floral pattern, a white kaolin clay pipe stem fragment identified by Glasgow as the place of manufacture and the manufacturer's name Murray; and a fragment of a pipe bowl displaying a human face or effigy.
Not shown is a Henderson Pipe stem from Montreal that was also found on the Egan farm.
Ceramic Teacup
Collection: Egan Farm
Object: Teacup
Material: Ceramic
Period: Mid 19th Century
Date: 1850 to 1870
Four small fragments of refined white earthenware with sponged or hand-painted floral design (rose-coloured stems, blue five-petalled flowers with three single leaves form one apex). Trimmed with rose-coloured band on convex surface. Colours suggest late palette (post 1830).
Effigy Pipe Bowl
Collection: Egan Farm
Object: Effigy Pipe
Material: Ceramic
Period: Mid 19th Century
Date: 1850 to 1870
Bearing a headband, eyebrows and eyes, and a prominent nose and one half of a moustache, this kaolin pipe bowl fragment is classified as a human effigy pipe. It represents a typical Turk's Head pipe of the 19th Century, particularly the period 1820 to 1880. A maker cannot be determined, although Henderson is known to have made them during the period coinciding with the operation of this farm.
