1875: Curriers
"He had a very good house and outbuildings." ~ Surveyor's remarks on Francis Currier, 1874
First mentioned in the 1871 census for the Unorganized Territory Bonnechere, the Curriers were among the area's earliest settlers. Therein Francis Currier was listed as a hotel keeper. Curriers enjoyed good business from heavy, year-round travel into and out of the bush.
"The teamsters were not trusted with money to pay their expenses as many of them would spend it for drink at the first stopping place. They were given 'way orders'. . . . As some teamsters could not read, the dinner, hay and stabling order was printed on blue paper." ~ Charles Macnamara, McLaughlin Bros. Lumber Company, 1885, on Currier's Stopping Place
