Basin Depot 2000 - Metals
This grouping of artifacts illustrates the result of categorizing artifacts by material rather than function. We have a baking pan or roaster sporting a ring, two masses of lead foil, one carefully folded the other crumpled, a tin can, a small hook for a clock door, another hook fashioned to hold something and designed to be driven into a beam, fragments of various files, a length of rod, and a pry bar forged by a blacksmith. All grist for a clever interpreter.
Hook
Collection: Basin Depot 2000
Object: Hook
Material: Iron
Period: Late 19th Century
This general purpose hook, made by a blacksmith, is meant to be driven into a post or beam. Its fine taper has a sufficient curve to require careful placement of a lamp handle or similar item. The curve also ensured that the item could not be accidentally knocked from the hook.
Tin Can
Collection: Basin Depot 2000
Object: Can
Material: Metal
Period: Mid 20th Century
This crushed "tin" can represents a relatively late addition to the artifacts recovered on-site. It appears to have been deliberately flattened prior to disposal. It is about the right size for a can of baked beans or soup.
